Traffic-TrackerTM is a joint initiative of Tracker Network (Pty) Ltd,a leading SA Vehicle Tracking and recovery company, and TrafficNet (Pty)Ltd, an independent aggregator of traffic incident information.

The Traffic-TrackerTM system provides real-time average traffic speed information for South African roads on a countrywide basis. This high-accuracy information is derived from a large installed base of in-vehicle GPS units, and can be reflected on a lane-by-lane basis if required. Link-lengths can be adjusted to suit specific applications. Details of known traffic incidents including accidents, roadworks, etc can also be reflected, which provides a context for interpretation of the traffic speed information.

Current and historical speed data derived by Traffic-TrackerTM can be used to predict expected journey time between various points on the road network.

The Traffic-TrackerTM system can also be used to measure queuing time at toll gates, border posts, etc.

Average Traffic speed is a very direct measure of what road users are actually experiencing at a given moment at any point on the road network. It is also a measure which responds very quickly to the occurrence of incidents.

Live average traffic speeds on the N3 (eastern bypass) in Gauteng (consolidated into four speed ranges) are show in the window on the right. Average traffic speeds are updated at 3-minute intervals in this example.

Applications based on real-time speed, predicted journey time and/or incident information can be developed for:

  • road network operators
  • traffic authorities
  • emergency and recovery services
  • transportation consultants
  • fleet (logistics) operators
  • GPS navigation system vendors
